Dr. Rajan Mahtani-Launched Steven Malama Award Given For The Year 2018-19

The Steven Malama award is among the most recognised and notable educational awards in Zambia. The story behind the formation of the award is as inspiring as the person itself. Steven Malama was a notable law professional who was instrumental in changing the framework of law education and affiliation in Zambia. After many years of persuading the Government of Zambia, Steven Malama was able to merge two distinct bars- Solicitor’s Bar and Barrister’s bar into a single bar. With this merger, law professionals and legal enthusiasts are now able to get law affiliation. Late Steven Malama was a close friend of Dr. Rajan Mahtani, a noted businessmen, philanthropist and another distinguished professional in his own industry. To honour the significant contributions of his friend, Dr. Rajan Mahtani decided to launch the Steven Malama award.

The award was registered in the year 2012 and given for the first time in 2013. The Steven Malama award is given every year to the top deserving students graduating from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education. The top graduating student must also qualify for the bar in their first attempt to be eligible for the award. The award carries a plaque, certificate of recognition and a prize money worth K15,000. This prize money has been lauded by law academics for providing deserving students with the opportunity to further uplift their career.

The award for the year 2018-19 was received by Emmanuel Bwalya Kaluba. After receiving the award, an article was written by Emmanuel in which he thanked Dr. Mahtani for his contributions to law education in Zambia. This article was later published at the Daily Mail newspaper.
